a late remembrance

Stan was an icon to us public health types. Kind of like John Snow. I worked with him in India in the 1990’s on a food aid evaluation hosted by John Grant (at the time working at the USAID India Mission), James Grant’s son, who passed at an early age.

Stan was such an upbeat and positive person. I remember that he and I, the two epidemiologists, were the only ones to eat and get sick from shrimp at the hotel. We laughed about it. Then, we were on different field teams and he was impressed when I figured out a way to connect us all by phone while we were in remote areas of India doing field work. Such a dynamo who will always live on in the hearts and minds of those who knew him and even those who didn’t.
