Inspired by Stan

Back in the fall of 2010, I received a cold call from an Atlanta phone number just as I was planning to go to bed after a long day at work as an AmeriCorps volunteer. On the other end of the phone, Stan expressed interest in my experiences in Central America and working with undocumented Latino populations in different parts of the U.S. He only introduced himself as Stan, and he never told me which school of public health he was calling from. We had a great conversation about the importance of thinking about global health in both international and local contexts. Afterwards, I Googled him and realized that he is a public health giant. I ended up deciding to attend Rollins because of that introductory phone call, in which Stan was so humble and acted so interested in my experience. I learned so much from Stan, in and out of the classroom. I especially appreciated the way he asked students for our 5-year plans and the way he emphasized listening to the community. I am forever grateful to have learned from Stan.
