Long time friend, associate and counselor

In 1975 I joined the Bangladesh smallpox eradication team and it was there that my life was changed by Stan. He was our leader and over a three month period I great to love and respect him. He was a model of honesty, industry, commitment and goodness. When my rotation was coming to a close he met with me in Dacca and he asked for my critique of him and his work. He then counseled me to continue working in international public health. I did what he suggested and I worked with him during the CCCD Africa project in the 1980s. I marveled at his industry, insight, and street smarts. He was supportive when I decided to leave academic medicine in 1999 for full time work in international public health. I saw him whenever I was in Atlanta and I always appreciated his insights. I will always be grateful to him and his family for organizing the 2018 Bangladesh smallpox team reunion in New Hampshire because it gave me a chance to say thank you to Stan for all that he had done for me. I miss him terribly.
