I treasure many good memories of Stan. I was fortunate to work with him in Guatemala on his last trip there. He was establishing a nutrition program that was practical for the particular needs of the Highlands. A favorite experience was when only Dottie, Stan and I went to Guatemala together. We spent time with their friends, including Rosario and Mercedes, and participated in a Health Fair. The topic requested by the midwives was complications of pregnancy and childbirth. The two of them gave me the confidence to do my part in Spanish. A highlight of that trip was spending time in a ranchero in the rain forest. We finally saw the Quetzal bird together, although many who live there never see it. We could here the bird call at dawn and went out to watch him feed on red berries. It seemed a miracle and we were as excited as children. Stanley Foster was larger than life and saved many lives. The person I knew was brilliant and funny. He adored Dottie and their family. My life was enriched by knowing him and I was happy that he was my friend.
