My memories of my brother Stan’s last year were our conversations we had about our Elm Point Camp summers. Mother’s first day of school vacation at Melrose High School, we packed up the car for our summer at Camp. Grammy packed her suitcase the whole week before! We were to spend the whole summer getting to know our whole Elm Point family, aunts, uncles and cousins. When we were at working age, Stan worked at the Yum, Yum Shop, and I worked as a waitress. What a wonderful experience these summers were! This summer, thanks to Dr. Paul Foster, Stan and Dottie stopped in Williamsburg en route north. It was my last visit with Stan though we had several phone talks, one just before he went into a coma. Stan’s always felt very proud of the Elm Point family.
From Joann Foster Maslin:
My memories of Stan this year were our conversations of many summers at Elm Point [family camp]* after mother finished school at Melrose High School [MA]. We packed up the car the day after school was over. Grammy [Grace Burton Ide] had had her suitcase packed all week! We looked forward to spending the whole summer with aunts, uncles, and cousins enjoying the Lake and all the Elm Point traditions like cake fights [team hide & seek with cake–or is it a pie?], swimming to the red stake, walking to Ernest’s [candy shop], and pie beds [pine needle/pine cone surprise at bottom of sheets]! When we were old enough to work, Stan was employed at the Yum Yum Shop [first of 5 family members], and I was a waitress. In our phone calls this year we did remember so many things …it was such a good way to connect.
This summer, thanks to Paul Foster, Stan & Dottie stopped in Williamsburg enroute north to see me. This was our last fare well. Such wonderful memories of such a supportive brother will be with me the rest of my life.
